Telangana State Universities Scrap Ph.D Entrance Test

The state government of Telangana has scrapped entrance test for Ph.D courses in universities across the state. The recommendation in this regard was made by a three-member expert committee comprising vice chancellors of three state universities. The committee recommended that the admission process for Ph.D courses can be based on National Eligibility Test (NET) or TS SET (Telangana State Eligibility Test).

The committee was of the opinion that more candidates are appearing for NET/ TS SET, and there is no point of holding Ph.D entrance exam as NET/ SET will be the major criteria for the admission to Ph.D courses.

At present, Ph.D admissions in Telangana state universities are based on NET/ SET/ Ph.D entrance test scores. Usually, respective state universities conduct Ph.D entrance test. Earlier this year, there was also a proposal for common Ph.D entrance test. However, the expert committee suggested scrapping the Ph.D entrance test.

One of the issues that the expert committee took into the consideration was that universities are facing many issues while conducting the entrance test and announcing the results. Apart from these, fixing the cut-off mark for the admission to Ph.D courses has become more troublesome for the state universities. The recent Ph.D admission chaos at Kakatiya University was the best example in this regard, the committee noted.

According to old admission norms, universities give first preference to JRF/ NET/ SET qualified candidates for the admission to Ph.D courses. The last preference is given to the candidates who qualify Ph.D entrance test. Over the years, the students who qualify entrance test claimed that they were not given a fair chance in the admissions.

The state government has approved the recommendation made by the expert committee on scrapping the Ph.D entrance test.
