UGC Directs Deemed Universities to Follow Govt. Guidelines on Fee Structure of PG Medical Courses

  • UGC directed the deemed universities in Pondicherry to follow the guidelines issued by the government with regard to fees structure of PG medical courses.
  • If the deemed varsities fail to comply with the guidelines of state government, UGC will take strict action against them.
UGC Directs Deemed Universities to Follow Govt. Guidelines on Fee Structure of PG Medical Courses

The University Grants Commission or UGC directed the deemed universities in Pondicherry to follow the guidelines issued by the government with regard to fees structure of Postgraduate medical courses. The commission further directed the deemed varsities to collect the fee from students through Centralised Admission Committee of Pondicherry government. If the deemed varsities fail to comply with the guidelines of state government, UGC will take strict action against them.

Recently, some students met L-G of Pondicherry, Ms. Kiran Bedi and raised their concerns about deemed universities. The students claimed that deemed varsities are charging high fees, more than what is prescribed by the government. Later, Kiran Bedi took up the issue with the UGC following which it warned private deemed varsities to follow the guidelines of state government with an immediate effect.

All private medical colleges have also been directed to disclose their fee structure, to which many followed suit recently. Surprisingly, there is a lot of variation between the fee structure of merit quota and management quota. Few private medical colleges are charging around Rs. 7 lakh under merit quota, and Rs. 71 lakh under NRI and management quota.

Medical education is becoming a costly affair in the country and aspirants are finding it difficult ti cope up with it. In view of that, the centre upgraded its admission rules for PG medical courses that must be followed by all states. As per the new rules, 50% seats come under convener quota, and the rest come under institutional quota.
