Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', the Union Education Minister, has launched the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission for internship-embedded degree programs. The guidelines are part of the New National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and meant for the Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) in India. The guidelines were launched during a Conclave on Transformational Reforms in Higher Education held on Saturday, 7 August 2020.
This event was conducted online and was attended by many dignitaries such as Sanjay Dhotre, the Minister of State for HRD, DP Singh, the Chairperson of UGC, Amity Khare, the Higher Education Secretary, Najma Akhtar, the VC of Jamia Milia Islamia University, Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthy, the Directo of IIT Madras, among others.
NEP 2020 has recommended numerous reforms in the higher education system of India. These guidelines are one of the very first to be released by UGC based recommendations. NEP 2020 had proposed that HEIs will provide their students with internship opportunities in local business and industries. Research internships at HEIs are also counted among the same.
During the conclave, it was discussed that these internships will be beneficial in improving the employability of the students. They are part of the move to make higher education in India more holistic and based on providing conceptual education to the students. The practical skills picked up by a student during these internships will help them become ready to face the challenges in a professional environment.
