UGC Releases Notification to Recognise BSRMS as a Five-Year-Long Course

UGC has released a notification to recognise five years long degree programmes called Bachelor of Sowa-Rigpa Medicine and Surgery or BSRMS. Read the piece below to know more about the course. 

 UGC Recognises BSRMS

As per a recent notification released by the University Grant Commission (UGC), it is to recognise the five years long degree programme called Bachelor of Sowa-Rigpa Medicine and Surgery or BSRMS. This form of medicine is usually practised in the Himalayan regions of India. Other than that, it is also practised abroad in Bhutan, Tibet, China, Nepal and some parts of the former Soviet Union. This form of medicine was first recognised by the Govt. of India and added to the IMCC (Indian Medicine Central Council Act), 1970 with effect from January 1, 2012.

Prasar Bharati News Services (PBNS) posted a tweet declaring the recognition of BSRMS by the UGC. The tweet informed about the duration of the programme, which is five years and also threw light on the requirements for the programme. As per the notification, interested candidates are required to hold at least the 10+2 level of education for admission to the Bachelor of Sowa-Rigpa Medicine and Surgery or BSRMS programme.

The Sowa Rigpa system is commonly known as the Amchi system of medicine. The word Sow Rigpa means the Science of Healing. Indian states like West Bengal (Darjeeling), Himachal Pradesh (Lahoul & Spiti), Jammu & Kashmir (Ladakh Region) and Arunachal Pradesh have been practising this system of medicine.

  • Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Leh (under Ministry of Culture, GOI)

  • Tibetan Medical & Astrological Institute, Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh of his Holiness Dalai Lama
