Uttar Pradesh: NET Not Mandatory for Ph.D. Holders for Post of Assistant Professors

The government of Uttar Pradesh has clarified that the candidates who obtained their Ph.D. degree on or before July 11, 2009, have to note that they are exempted from qualifying in National Eligibility Test (NET) for the post of assistant professor.

The government of Uttar Pradesh has clarified that the candidates who obtained their Ph.D. degree on or before July 11, 2009, have to note that they are exempted from qualifying in National Eligibility Test (NET) for the post of assistant professor. Therefore, the candidates who aspire for the post of assistant professor in various universities and state-run colleges across the state can apply now, as NET is not binding on them.

As per the official information that was given by the government of Uttar Pradesh, a total number of 5,651 assistant professor posts are lying vacant in 138 government and 338 government-aided colleges. Similarly, a total number of 269 posts are vacant in 17 universities across the state. So far, there was a confusion regarding the criterion for the appointment of assistant professors in various institutes across the state.

Dinesh Sharma, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Higher Education, UP indicated that the decision taken by the government would fill vacant posts in universities and colleges. on the other hand, the government is also laying more emphasis to enhance the quality of education in higher educational institutions across the state.

As per the regulations of University Grants Commission (May 2016), the candidates who registered for the Ph.D. programme prior to July 11, 2016, are eligible for the appointment of assistant professor in universities and colleges and qualifying in NET is not mandatory for these candidates.

However, the rules are binding only to those who completed their Ph.D. in regular mode and two external examiners must have evaluated the thesis submitted by these Ph.D. scholars. On the other hand, these candidates must have presented two papers in conferences or seminars apart from his/ her Ph.D. work.
