HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank informed that CBSE class 11th students will have options to choose from Applied Mathematics and Mathematics. The Applied Mathematics paper will be offered to the students as an academic elective and will teach students about the practical application of math in different fields.

The current Mathematics syllabus is in sync with Science Subjects but does not go well with Commerce subjects. The CBSE circular informed that the Applied Mathematics paper will be offered to students in Senior Secondary classes with an objective to provide relevant experience in Mathematics which is applicable in other fields as well.

The CBSE circular further informed that students should not confuse Applied Mathematics which is offered as a skill subject. CBSE has made many value additions to develop substantial mathematical skills and to keep up with current trends.

Students who are planning to study Mathematics courses at a higher level or are planning to opt for Mathematics Honours course should opt for Mathematics (041) paper. Whereas students planning to take up other fields should opt for Applied Mathematics (241). The CBSE Applied Mathematics subject is primarily designed in keeping the requirements of other fields.
