Sports to be Integral to CBSE Education: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju

Minister Kiren Rijiju, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced that Sports will now be an integral part of the CBSE curriculum and education. He stated that in order to win medals in the Olympics, it is necessary to train the youth for years to increase the chances of winning more medals.

In addition to the recent advancements that have been made by the CBSE, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju (Independent-in-charge), announced that sports will now be an integral part of CBSE curriculum. This will also be a part in determining the achievement of a student.

In a statement made by Minister Kiren Rijiju, he informed that PM Narendra Modi has announced the establishment of Sports Education Board. He added that the New Education Policy will also see sports as an integral part of education, wherein, CBSE is taking steps to integrate sports and make it an essential part of education.

The statement had been made by Minister Kiren Rijiju, after the inauguration ceremony of the Dr NPV Ramaswamy Udyar Hockey Centre at Tamil Nadu’s Sri Ramachandra Medical College and University. He stated that the decision has been taken since sports has been considered as an extra-curricular activity for decades, which needed to be removed.

CBSE has been developing a new system where sports would not be considered as an “extra-curricular activity”. While speaking with the media, the Minister declared that “sports is the central part of education now”. He further stated that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports have been in contact with the HRD Ministry regarding the issue.

Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that he has attended the Cabinet Meeting, wherein the proposal has been accepted and the preparation of integrating sports into education is underway. He added that the Modi Government is determined to build India as a Sporting Powerhouse and is giving priority to sports overall in the country.

The Minister stated that the government has kept an objective winning as many medals in the 2020 Olympics, which is set to be held in Tokyo. He stated that in order to win medals in the next Olympics, players need to be trained for years. For this, they will be preparing and training the existing players since there is not a lot of time left to train new players. He also stated that the government will be providing all the support to the players, which also include building an India House pavilion in Tokyo.

The Youth Affairs and Sports Minister stated that the India House will be offering the athletes with the provision of food, accommodation, and transportation. He stated that all the necessities of the Indian athletes will be managed by the India House, in order to support them.

The biggest target or goal that has been envisioned by India is to attain a position in the top 10 medal lists, globally. The previous Olympics saw only two medals in the name of India, which needs to change, stated the Minister. Consecutive Olympics are set to be held in Paris, in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.

In another statement made by the Minister, he said that in his meeting with the heads of different sporting federations, the goal is to win medals in the double-digit by the Olympics 2024. While the target for Olympics 2028 is for India to be one of the Top 10 Medal lists in the world. He stated that this step is a mist for India if we wish to become a sporting powerhouse.

During questioning, the Minister stated different facts to promote sports among the youth of India. He stated that Tamil Nadu has had a great sports lineage and the potential to develop more talents in the field is great as well.

To ensure that young talents are developed ad nurtured properly, the Ministry will be recruiting the young talents across the country at a large scale, through the “Khelo India” initiative. Presently, 14,000 boys and girls have been selected and shortlisted to different training centers through the Khelo India initiative with the help of the Sports Authority of India. He announced that the government aims to increase the number.
