DU: Students of Lakshmibai College Embrace Smart Identity Cards to go Cashless
Lakshmibai College of the Delhi University has been adopting plastic money measures to make transactions easier for students by introducing smart Identity Cards on campus.
With demonetization restricting the cash-based transactions, electronic money has come as a respite. Lakshmibai College of the Delhi University has been adopting plastic money measures to make transactions easier for students.
The college issued smart Identity Cards to students in October 2016. The cards are integrated with RFID or Radio Frequency Identification chips that enable them to be used as plastic money on the college campus. Lakshmibai College is the first DU college to introduce such cards.

In this time of cash crisis in India, these cards have come as a relief. Students are utilizing this source as the card can be used to pay for anything on the campus including, college fees, photocopies, library fines and even canteen bills.
Principal Pratyush Vatsala said that the card was introduced with a payment method to increase its utility. He also said that students can easily get it recharged from the on-campus branch of Bank of India. Students need not have an account with the bank to add balance to their cards, added the principal.
Students are very happy with their new cards. A first-year student, Aakanksha Garg said that the card is a big help now that there is a cash problem in the country. The cards are color coded to determine the student’s year.
Another student from second year, Kriti Thakur said that the ID cards are very convenient as there is no need to carry cash anymore for campus expenses. She further added that now they don’t even have to worry about cash getting stolen with the new ID cards.
Registering the success of these smart I-Cards, other DU colleges are also planning to implement the idea soon. The Principal of Hans Raj College, Dr. Rama said that they are also planning to implement such cards and go cashless. He also said that they might also include students’ medical history on the chip.

Students from other colleges are also hopeful that they will soon get to use such I-Cards. SGND Khalsa College student, Mayank Garg said that the idea is brilliant and very productive. He was hopeful that their college will also implement the idea soon.
