Addressing the nation at the 45th convocation ceremony of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind expressed his concern on the inadequate number of medical seats in the country.

In his opinion, the regulatory impediments and guidelines are the major reasons that prevented the growth of medical seats in the country. During his speech, honourable President laid emphasis on gaps that remain between the best healthcare systems and population in the country.

Pointing out the problems in the healthcare system in India, Mr. Kovind explained that the absence of enough number of doctors is creating heavy workload on the existing doctors. Therefore, the existing situation should be addressed very urgently to improve the quality of healthcare system in the country, he added.

President Ram Nath Kovind exhorted that Indian medical practitioners or doctors need more help in the form of colleagues. At present, there is a need for a new regulatory system, which would play a dominant role in enhancing the availability of doctors and medical professionals, he explained.

Expressing his concern on the increasing population, President of India pointed that a nation like India with 1.3 billion people need a high number of doctors. However, the existing medical seats in India are 67,000 at UG level and 31,000 at PG level. The number of seats available is inadequate for the growing population, he said.

Adding further, Mr. Kovind indicated that the low availability of medical seats in the country is forcing a large number of medical aspirants to rely on foreign countries. Indian students going abroad due to limited options in the home country is not acceptable, expressed the President.

Appreciating the premier medical institute (AIIMS), Mr. Ram Nath Kovind pointed that the institute is a byword for the rich experience, commitment and quality. The faculty, doctors and students of AIIMS are the pride of country’s medical fraternity. He further appreciated AIIMS for maintaining exceptional medical standards, despite tough circumstances.

Interacting with students, President of India said that medical students and doctors should be legitimately rewarded for academic excellence, medical expertise and skills.

Concluding his speech, Mr. Kovind mentioned that even though our Indian medical scientists developed new vaccines, the immunisation record of India remains below the desirable levels.
