There is just one test that the satellite has to clear. It is called the Qualification Model (QM), after which it will be handed over to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for further testing.

The entire satellite is made by the students of IIT Madras from the scratch and the project is called IITMSAT. It is expected that during its first-year mission, the Space-based Proton and Electron Energy Detector (SPEED) on board the satellite will collect and transmit data about electrons and protons present in the Earth’s upper ionosphere.

The satellite will detect and measure the count rates of high energy protons and electrons and the data collected by IITMSAT could throw more light onto the hypothesis that there is an assumed correlation between bursting of particles prior to an earthquake.

Akshay Gulati who is the Project Officer of IITMSAT and oldest student member told the reporters that he and other students are working on the satellite’s transmitter as it was found faulty during testing.
