The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has decided to formulate a solution for the problem of difficulty faced in filling the seats by many private management and engineering institutes. In an attempt to put the unused infrastructure of its campus to good use, GTU has allowed five colleges that are affiliated to it to run skill-based diploma and bachelor vocational courses on its premises.

GTU has permitted Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Technology of Anand, RNG Patel Institute of Technology Isroli of Surat, CK Shah Vijapurwala Institute of Management of Vadodara, Sunshine Educational Trust Group of Institutions of Rajkot, and LJ Polytechnic of Ahmedabad to run thirteen bachelor and diploma courses. A total of 375 students will be enrolled and the classes will begin from the month of August 2019.

The Vice-Chancellor of GTU, Navin Sheth, spoke about this experiment and said this initiative has worked out for using the existing infrastructure of technical colleges which is not used otherwise due to vacant seats or lesser intake of students. Five institutes have been given permission to conduct these courses. This is also a unique attempt of the state government for implementing the Centre’s Skill India campaign.

The courses that will be offered will range from bachelor’s programmes to diploma courses in software development, production technology, automobile servicing, refrigeration and air conditioning, insurance and industrial tool management, and banking and financial services. Sheth also said that in the coming months, GTU will be planning to give permission for some short term certificate courses as well.

GTU suggested another solution for filling the large number of vacant seats that some popular technical and engineering courses of various colleges have. It recommended that students from other states should also be able to take admission in these colleges and it plans to pitch this suggestion to the state government.
