The Haryana and Punjab High Court has upheld the decision of the Panjab University to scrape off the law entrance test for the law courses offered by the varsity. The High Court bench comprises Justice Ashok Kumar Verma and Justice AG Masih and they termed the decision as “fully justified”.

The HC bench further added that conducting of the law entrance test by Panjab University would mean congregation of a huge number of people at the only exam centre, which would result in the spread of the contagious virus and could be a threat to the safety of the students.

HC came to the conclusion that the students and the resident on the campus will be put at risk along with the candidates, staff invigilators and those accompanying them. Therefore, Panjab University’s decision was declared to be in public interest especially when it was just implemented for just one year.

The judgement was delivered by the High Court due to the petitions filed to challenge the PU move to scrap the exam for law courses offered by UILS (University Institute of Legal Studies) and Department of Laws. Earlier, the petitioners have countered that the plenty of admission exams and competitions were being held by various universities in the nation.

The court found that the varsity thought about conducting an online test but the thought was adjourned due to the inability or insufficiency to ensure fairness. The High Court also took note of the fact that the Panjab University had the authority to suspend the test, though it is open for judicial review and scrutiny. The bench found out that the university had consultations with various government universities and agencies where the conclusion was always against holding the online entrance test.
