HRD Ministry Asks AMU to Look for a New Vice Chancellor
HRD Ministry has taken the decision as the current VC does not meet the clauses of University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations 2010.
The Union Ministry of Human Resource and Development has directed the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to kickstart the process of finding a replacement for the current Vice- Chancellor Zaheer Uddin Shah. HRD Ministry has taken the decision as the current VC does not meet the clauses of University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations 2010.

According to the regulations of UGC, a VC must have at least ten years of teaching experience in addition to being an academician. However, according to Shah, VC of AMU, the application of the UGC Regulations 2010 on AMU will undermine the minority status of the university. On the other hand, Shah has sought for the legal advice on the matter.
The selection procedure of VC at AMU is entirely different from other varsities. The AMU Executive Council shortlists the candidates for the position of Vice-Chancellor and sends the list of three candidates in order of preference to the President of India for final selection. President functions as the Visitor to the university.

Shah was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of AMU in the year 2012. However, the appointment of Shah has been challenged in Supreme Court as he does not meet the requirements of UGC Regulations. He was a retired army officer and does not have teaching experience.
