The HRD Ministry will soon be launching induction programmes for first-time teachers and leadership programmes for Heads of various universities and Institutes. The decision was taken after considering the recommendation made by the Group of Secretaries appointed by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

More than 30 institutes have been identified as training centres for higher education teachers. These include the Teaching Learning Centres or TLCs of IIT-Kanpur, NIT Warangal, IIT-BHU, IISER-Bhopal along with Jamia Millia Islamia and Central University of Haryana’s Schools of Education.

Three-month induction programme will be organised for faculty in colleges, universities and institutes at the designated centres. These programmes will cover areas like roles and responsibilities of teachers, assessment and evaluation, the structure of university and functioning, technology utilisation for teaching, and academic leadership.

This programme will help the newly appointed teachers to understand the functioning of the university and different teaching methodologies. It will enhance the productivity of the teachers as well as the overall quality of education at the institute in question.

Similarly, 12 institutes have been identified to provide training for newly appointed pro vice-chancellors, vice-chancellors, directors, deans, registrars and heads of departments. The duration of this leadership programme will vary from four to seven days.

This leadership programme will focus on emphasising the importance of good governance at colleges. It will guide the heads of educational institutions to lead and maintain a consistent growth curve in academic, administrative as well as financial domains. Leadership skills are an essential part of this programme.

History of Indian higher education, financing and funding for higher education, leadership strategies for enhanced performance, setting up a new institution, evolving research capacity and internationalisation of higher education will be some of the most important spheres of this programme.

Currently, a one-month orientation and refresher programme is provided by the UGC for teachers hired to teach at higher educational institutes. This programme is offered at 66 academic staff colleges identified by the UGC. The newly designed three-month induction programme designed by the HRD Ministry is an enhanced version of the orientation programme offered by UGC.

Training will be provided through classroom learning, group activities, case studies and field visits. Teachers and heads of institutions willing to broaden their horizons will also be able to enrol for these programmes regardless of the tenure of their service.
