IIT Delhi Postpones Proposal to Scrap Instrumental Technology Course

IIT Delhi has postponed the proposal by Senate to suspend Instrument Technology course, which is being offered over the past five decades. Senate, in the position of the highest academic body of IIT Delhi, has confirmed that a national-level committee must primarily examine the merits of scrapping the course. A decision regarding scrapping the course will be taken only after the committee submits its report on the relevancy of course in the current context and arguments justifying scrapping the course.

The Instrument Design Development Centre at IIT Delhi offers Master’s in Design and M.Tech in Instrument Technology. The instrument technology course trains students in designing and making necessary tools in diverse areas such as weather, space, defence, medicine and health.

At present, there are only two permanent faculty members for M.Tech in Instrument Technology course. On the other hand, several other departments at IIT Delhi also deal with instrument technology course. Due to the lack of a sufficient number of permanent faculty, the existing faculty members are being subjected to a heavy workload. Therefore, IIT Delhi senate has proposed scrapping of the course.

At present, 12 students and 12 Ph.D. scholars are enrolled in instrument technology course at IIT Delhi.

Recently, IIT Delhi decided to conduct a research on Air Pollution. For this purpose, the premier institute has set up Centre of Excellence for Research on Clean Air (CERCA). The centre’s responsibility is to provide sustainable solutions to minimise air pollution in the environment, particularly in Delhi.
