The Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar organised its third Industry Meet last week. The meeting was presided over by Prof. Sarita Kumar Das, the director of IIT Ropar with many renowned industry leaders and representatives attending it.

The key objective of the meet was to bring academic and industry personalities on the same platform to discuss the various issues related to the industry's expectations from the students, to boost industries in the local region and solve live industrial problems via different projects. It also aimed to explore the distinct possibility of launching industry sponsored labs at the varsity.

Professor Das, on this occasion, revealed that the academia-industry linkage in India is still in the beginning phase. Thus, a more sustaining and long-term structural plan is required for the continuous development of academic research driven sector as well as industrial sector. The conclave aimed to focus on enhancing academia-industry collaboration for employability, greater productivity, innovation, augmenting research through different measures.

Various topics like research grants, recognition of industrial projects like published research papers, industrial participation and additional funding required were covered in the meeting. The discussion also covered the efforts each department of the institute can make to encourage participation through industrial workshops, lecture series, meetings, industrial visits to campus, etc. to build the gap between academic and industry. As an outcome of this meet, institutes were supposed to present an industrial policy draft.

The meeting also briefed about the importance of ‘Make in India’ and different ways in which academia-industry collaboration can contribute to this national policy of Indian government. As many as nineteen members from Industrial Associates of IIT Ropar and about twenty-five members from other industries were present at the meeting.

Finally, a formal launch for the Council of Industrial Associates of IIT Ropar took place. It intends to strengthen its Industrial Associates from 19 to 25 within this year. The varsity also shared its vision to have fifty industries as part of the Industrial Associates of IIT Ropar with at least fifteen good ongoing projects for the year 2020.
