The Indian Navy recruits officers with exceptional technical capabilities and those who can manage hi-tech overhaul. Keeping this in mind, Indian Navy will shortlist candidates based on their performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Mains). So, all those looking forward to making a career in the Indian Navy, will have to appear for JEE Mains 2017. The candidates under this 10+2 B Tech cadet entry scheme will then be eligible for January 2018 course at INA or the Indian Naval Academy.

Highlights of the scheme:

  • Around 120 candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of the scores obtained by them in the Joint Entrance Examination or JEE Mains.
  • These candidates will then have to appear for the interview round at the Services Selection Board (SSB).
  • Candidate’s score in subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM combination) of the class 12th exams will not be considered in the 10+2 B Tech cadet entry scheme.
  • Since an uneven system of scoring system is adopted by different state boards of the country, JEE scores will now be the benchmark for selecting suitable candidates.

The government is in complete favour of the above move. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also agreed to share the JEE (Mains) ranks for the same.

Indian Navy has been introducing changes its recruitment process so that it can select candidates as per the desired requirements. Navy officers are more or less involved in roles that are technological and technical in nature. With the advancements and upgradation of its existing ships, weapon systems, state-of-the-art warships etc, it has become mandatory to have technologically strong officers on board.

Earlier, the Indian Navy had planned to ensure that all the new officers that are recruited are Bachelor of Technology or B Tech degree holders. Keeping that intact, the selected candidates will further be trained with leadership and traditional military skills.

Currently, the Indian Navy recruits in the following ways:

  • 78 cadets are given training and have to undergo a three-year course at the tri-service National Defence Academy (NDA). They are awarded B Tech degrees only after undergoing a one-year intensive training at the INA.
  • 110 cadets join INA directly for a four-year B Tech programme (in two batches every year) after they clear the UPSC exams.
