JNU Issues Warning Letters for Short Attendance

TheJawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) will be sendingwarning lettersto the parents of nearly 7,000 students of the university. Around 86% of total students from the varsity are failing to meet the new mandatory attendance rule.

As per the sources, three MPhil/ Ph.D. students from theSchool of Arts and Aesthetics JNUhave already sent warning letters. The letters were issued on 16 April 2018 by the office of the assistant registrar. The warning letter issued to the parents states that their child has been reported absent for all days in the currentwinter semesteri.e. until February 2018. The university will issue the warning letters to the students who fail to meet 75% attendance policy.

However, the students of the university expressed their anger against their action of sending the warning letters to their parents. As per Zoya Khan, Students Union Vice President,JNUstated this move of the university is not justified as all theseresearch studentsare adult and there is no point sending a letter to their parents. According to her, this is their way of undermining the voice of the students.

Mandatory attendance requirements are not new in the capital and the universities such asDelhi UniversityandAmbedkar University. Both of them have a minimum attendance requirement but it is applicable to undergraduate students mostly.
