More Funds & Autonomy to High Performing Institutes: HRD Minister at NIRF 2017

While HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar, unveiled the National Institutional Rankings Framework, also known as NIRF for the year 2017, he reiterated the following:

  • The performance of institutes in the educational rankings will give a push to them as the government will shell out more funding for these institutes.
  • Institutes will receive enhanced autonomy as per their ranking and position in the NIRF 2017.
  • Freedom of functioning at per own terms and conditions will be an added benefit to the institute.

The NIRF Rankings 2017 were released on Monday, 3rd April 2017. At the time of addressing the press, he said that a policy regarding 'good performance - more autonomy' will be announced which will not encourage the spirit of competition among institutes but will also lead to the ultimate goal of enhancing the quality of education that is imparted at the institutes and universities across the country.

An initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India (GOI), the NIRF methodology was launched in the year 2015 with an objective to rank higher education institutes of India.

Other Highlights of NIRF 2017:

  • Many colleges under the University of Delhi did not apply for NIRF 2017, however, the ministry officials revealed that their data will be taken directly from AISHE or All India Survey on Higher Education which is conducted by the government.
  • Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) was adjudged the best in the 'overall' and 'universities' category of the rankings.
  • DU's Miranda House was further ranked as the top/best college of the country.
  • Premier university - Jawaharlal Nehru University, popularly known as JNU grabbed the second position in the 'universities' category and the sixth position in the 'overall' category, mainly for its efforts towards research work.
  • Engineering institutes of the country - IITs, seven among those, made it to the list of top 10 educational institutes of the country.
