National Institue of Technology has been facing faculty shortage for a long time, now. The issue was discussed at the NITSER meeting where the Human Resource Development Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal finally spoke on the matter and demanded NITs to accelerate the Faculty Recruitment Process. Chairpersons and Directors of NITs and IIEST, Shibpur attended the National Institute of Technology, Science Education and Research or NITSER meeting.

According to scourses, NITs are asked to start a recruitment drive to fill up 2,200 vacant faculty seats by the end of December. HRD Minister also gave the approval to have a tenure track system on the recruitment. A tuition fee waiver for Physically Handicapped/SC/ST students pursuing M. Tech were also discussed at the council meeting.

Presently, about 43% of teaching staff seats are vacant at NITs. The main reason being, continuous increase in the number of intakes every year. The number of seats at NITs and other Top Engineering Colleges like IITs are increasing in order to meet the government policies. This year, supplementary seats were provided to accommodate more women candidates on campus and in the upcoming academic session of 2020-21, seats have to be increased against the EWS quota.

With the increase in the number of students entering NITs or IITs, authorities have to make arrangements for their hostel facility as well. Most of the allocated funds to these universities get used up in construction, admission and facilitation of students.

Some of the NITs have started releasing the recruitment notification on their websites. The recruitment process is likely to be fast-tracked after the instruction of HRD Minister.
