A government committee under the Chairmanship of IIT Hyderabad Chairman, BVR Mohan Reddy recommended AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) to stop giving approval for new engineering colleges from 2020. The committee further advised the AICTE to review the creation of new capacity every two years. The committee has submitted a 41-page report to AICTE, and the suggestions are under consideration by AICTE.

AICTE Chairman, Mr. Anil Sahasrabuddhe revealed that the committee suggested no approval for additional seats in traditional engineering courses such as electronics, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. The committee further highlighted that engineering colleges should be allowed to transform current capacity in traditional engineering courses to emerging new technologies, he added.

The committee noted that only 40% of capacity utilisation is observed in traditional engineering courses. On the other hand, courses such as Computer Science Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Mechatronics are witnessing 60% of capacity utilisation. The committee advised AICTE to introduce UG engineering courses in 3D Printing and Design, Cyber Security, Data Sciences, Quantum Computing, Robotics, Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence.

The committee further explained that engineering colleges that had already submitted application forms for increasing intake would be considered for approval if these institutes comply with AICTE norms and infrastructure. AICTE can grant approvals based on the capacity utilisation of the concerned institute, indicated the committee.

According to the committee, emphasis should be given to quality education than merely approving additional intake and granting permission for new engineering colleges.
