Student Studies in SC Quota Scholarship of Delhi Government: Bags Seat in IIT Delhi

Vikas Kumar, an IIT Aspirant and a 16-year old son of a labourer bagged admission in IIT Delhi by availing IIT entrance exam coaching under Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana. The scholarship scheme was launched by the Delhi Government.

Vijay Kumar, a student who took coaching under the Scheduled Caste Scholarship Schemes introduced by the Delhi Government had met his dream of studying in Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi. Though he could not get into Computer Science Engineering (CSE) stream, he has still expressed joy for getting into the institute he dreamt of. He secured 918th rank in the JEE Advanced Examination which is the examination required to get into IITs.

In 2018-19, 4,953 students from Scheduled Caste Category, including Kumar availed the facilities of ‘Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana’ introduced by the Delhi Government. He took coaching in the institute named Sachdeva Colleges Ltd. which is located at the Patel Nagar area of New Delhi. Kumar ambitiously dreams to get a better future, unlike his past. His parents have the hope to see a transformative change in their lives in future.

Kumar appeared in a press conference on Monday, 29th July held on the ‘Success of the Scheme.’ Delhi’s Minister of Social Welfare, Rajendra Pal Gautam was also present in the conference.

Under the scheme launched in 2017, the students whose family income is less than 6 lakhs per annum get assistance up to 40,000 rupees, along with a 2,500 rupees of monthly stipend. The students then get enrolled in empanelled coaching academies for all top competitive exams such as JEE Advanced, NEET and CAT for Engineering, Medical and Management respectively.

Kumar studied in a Delhi Government School located in Paschim Vihar previously. He informed that he was provided with books and 10,000 rupees for taking coaching. He added that he did not pay anything for coaching as the expenses were covered in the scholarship scheme of the Delhi Government. He added that he got to know about IIT JEE (JEE Advanced) from his teacher at school, though he decided to opt for it, no other student of his school neither sat in the examination nor availed the scholarship.

An official statement said that in 2018-19, only 35 out of 107 students enrolled themselves under the scholarship scheme cracked JEE Advanced and NEET.
