TISS to Get UGC Grant; May not have to Sack 25 Professors

In its recent circular, the UGC has mentioned that it will continue all funding and grant schemes provided to TISS. However, the regulator mentioned that the schemes have been continued for the session 2017-18 and will be reviewed by the UGC.
Not long ago, TISS had announced that three of their centres funded by the UGC will be closed and close to 25 professors will be sacked as the result of this. In these difficult times, the decision of the UGC has brought relief for the students as well as the teachers.
The decision to release the grants was taken by the UGC on its 52nd meeting held on March 28, 2017.
The institute has held its ground and is firm on its initial decision. Talking about the closing of centres, Director of TISS, S Parasuraman said that the future of these centres is still in the ‘grey area’.

He further added that they will have to wait for the UGC to review the schemes before arriving at a final decision. TISS will wait till they receive the funds that the UGC is supposed to release for the functioning of the institutes before making the final call.
In the meantime, the appointments of the faculty appointed in the three centres that are supposed to shut down will lapse on March 31, added Parasuraman.
TISS blames the delay of grants from UGC for the operational flaws that have occurred within the institute and putting 25 of its professors out of jobs.

Students of this institute are confused regarding the final status of the institute but hope that the institute will take a stand in favour of the future of its students and staff.
