On January 30, 2018, the High Court of Allahabad dismissed the petitions filed by the candidates seeking the re-evaluation of UPTET 2017 answer sheets. The results of UPTET, that were announced on December 15, 2017, led to controversies as only 11% of the applicants qualified the examination. It might be the first time where 89% candidates failed UPTET. According to the official data of UP Board, only 89,803 candidates have cleared the exam out of 9.76 lakh candidates.

The petitioners claimed that there were numerous errors on OMR answer sheets. Pointing the reasons for the errors, the petitioners submitted that due to the wrongly filled registration number, language preference, roll number and booklet series, the examination authority did not evaluate the answer sheets of many candidates.

The High Court was not convinced with the argument of the petitioners. Dismissing the pleas, the court stated that the examination authority had given detailed instructions on the process of filling OMR answer sheet. The court termed the issue as ‘human error and the petitioners are responsible for their failure in the exam. Therefore, the court rejected to intervene in the matter and supported fair selected process.

Earlier, there were issues on provisional and final answer keys of UPTET. The results were delayed because the examination authority was busy with sorting out the errors in the answer key.
