Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) may soon allow UPSC candidates to withdraw from Civil Services examination if they wish to not appear for the exam. The new option will come into effect from 2019, and the Commission will implement the new option for Engineering Services Exam 2019 initially. The major reason for rolling out withdraw option for UPSC exams is that as per data, only half of the applicants appear for the Civil Services exam every year out of approximately 10 lakh applications received by the Commission.

UPSC Chairperson, Mr. Arvind Saxena revealed that the Commission prints papers, books exam venues, ships the documents, and hires invigilators for all the candidates who apply for the Civil Services exam. Since only 50% of applicants end up appearing for the exam, the resources of the Commission get wasted. Therefore, withdraw option will allow the applicants to refrain from the exam if they have other plans. On the other hand, the Commission will also have an exact estimate of the total number of candidates appearing for the exam, and initiate the exam process accordingly, he added.

Candidates who wish to withdraw from the Civil Services exam must provide the application number on the official website of UPSC. The candidates will receive a One Time Password (OTP) on their registered mobile number and e-mail. After the successful withdrawal of the application, the candidates will receive a confirmation message.
