Department of Laws- Panjab University - DL Chandigarh - DL

The Department of Laws, originally established at Lahore in 1889, was re-established at Shimla in 1948, shifted to Jalandhar in 1950 and finally re-located at the University Campus at Chandigarh in 1959. Its Alumni include Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, Union Cabinet Ministers, State Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, Ambassadors, Senior Bureaucrats, Police Officers and other legal luminaries. Justice imparting system is the foundation of every civilized nation. Law department formerly known as University Law College is committed to play an important role in the legal system of this university. Stature of this department is as big as its strength. Law graduates from this department are serving all over the country in the lower courts, High Courts and Supreme Court. The faculty of the department consists of 9 Professors, 6 Associate Professors,7 Assistant Professors, 8 part-time teachers and many Research Scholars working on various Research Programmes. Department has the pride alma matter of three Chief Justices of India, a large number of Chief Justices of the High Courts, members of subordinate judiciary, civil servants, law officers and members of the legal profession and a large number of legal luminaries and justices. The number of its alumni, which rose to the bench of the Supreme Court and in many High Courts of this country, is too large to mention. Chief Justice of India Dr. A.S. Anand taught in this department for a number of years.

Department of Laws- Panjab University Placements

Placement-cum-counseling cell of this department has been established only in the new millennium for a great cause to serve. Although cell is at its cradle stage but the cell aims at the great heights. The main objectives of the cell is to emphasize through a variety of programmes the learning of skills in the legal education curriculum. The cell endeavors to produce lawyers with sense of social responsibility who can face new challenges posed to the legal profession from time to time. In order to achieve this programme, the cell covers activities which include simulation exercises, working on real client problems, legislative drafting, and law reform exercise. The main objective of the Placement-cum-Counseling cell is to provide career counseling and guidance regarding various avenues available about academics and placements.

Library and Personal Computer Laboratory Department has its own library and computer lab to equip its students and faculty. Our Computer Laboratory (Digital Library) has 16 computers which is attached with library. The Computer Laboratory has latest Online databases such as Manupatra Online, West Law International, SCC Online Full text and CD-ROM databases such as Law Commission Reports , Criminal Law Journals, Income Tax Act, Income Tax Rules to facilitate the students with latest updates. Department has very rich library holding over 56,000 books in vast double storied area. Library maintains 55 periodicals, 22 monthly 9 quarterly 5 fortnightly 5 weakly 5 others (approximately) 50 journals, 6 law magazines and 9 newspapers to update the students regarding current legal development of the country and also at international level. Library has online as well as offline (CD-ROM) legal databases and other CD-ROM titles
