40% Seats at NIT Goa to be Reserved for Goans from 2017-18

40% Seats at NIT Goa to be Reserved for Goans from 2017-18

It is good news for the aspirants from Goa. Finally, the HRD Ministry is likely to reserve 40% of seats at National Institute of Technology, Goa for the students of the state. The institute will also get land from the state government for the construction of the permanent campus. One of the officials of state government revealed that the approval for the reservation of seats for the students of Goa, and grant of land likely to come to effect from the upcoming academic session, i.e., 2017-18.

Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar sent the proposal to HRD Ministry in 2012. The proposal indicated that 50% of seats must be reserved for the engineering aspirants Goa. The minister claimed that the state government is providing land for the construction of NIT Goa. Therefore, it is judicial to give exclusive reservation to the students of the state. The HRD Ministry gave the approval for the proposal in 2012-13. However, it was neither implemented nor come into force.

Director of NIT Goa, Prof. Uday Kumar met the Chief Minister of Goa and sought clarity on the matter. According to sources, 40% of seats are reserved for the students of Goa, and 10% of seats come under reservation to the students from Lakshadweep, Diu, and Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli. However, there is not any clarity on the implementation of the proposal. Sources say that the final decision will come before the commencement of the new academic session.

The land acquisition for the construction of a permanent campus for NIT Goa completed in March 2016. However, the state government did not approve the land grant, as HRD Ministry is yet to give approval for reservation of 40% seats.
