The High Court of Bombay directed the University of Mumbai to file its response on a petition filed by teachers’ union against new marking system for evaluating or assessing papers online. The court further directed the varsity to file a response within two weeks. The teachers’ union had filed the petition earlier this week highlighting reasons for the delay in declaring results for various undergraduate courses. The plea also raised issues over the way in which the OSM or On-Screen-Marking was implemented by the University of Mumbai. The court also expressed its disappointment over the delay in declaring the results. The court termed the current scenario as demonetization.

The teachers’ union also indicated that the varsity implemented On-Screen-Marking without providing necessary infrastructure like computers and internet connection. Therefore, there has been a long delay in the evaluation process. The varsity would have prepared everything in advance instead of implementing the online marking system at the eleventh hour. The varsity was to declare the results this week. But the evaluation process is still going on and there is no clarity on the date when the results will be declared.

The University of Mumbai had decided to introduce online assessment of answer scripts in February 2017. However, the varsity failed to award the contract to companies until April 2017. The evaluation of answer scripts began in the month of May.
At present, the varsity is having a tough time in linking answer sheets to the right student. Evaluation of 84% answer sheets has been wrapped up so far.
