Center announced that five new universities will be set up for minorities. Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi announced on December 29, 2016, that the universities will be established to provide higher education including medical courses for minority communities.

The universities will comprise state of the art facilities to provide medical education and skill development facilities to empower minorities. The universities will also comprise residential schools and will offer courses like Ayurved and Unani medical education.

These institutions will also provide 40% reservation for girl students, added the minister. Addressing the meeting of Maulana Azad Education Foundation, he also informed that the ministry has given its nod for the 16 Gurukul-type schools in Jharkhand, Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Although the universities will be developed for the minorities, students from other communities will also be able to study at these institutes. Girls’ quota will not be subjected to minorities and girls from all communities will be able to apply for the reserved seats.

A high-level committee will sit and work on the details and plan where the universities will be established in these states. The ministry is planning to start the universities by the academic session 2018, added Naqvi.

Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje has given the ministry five properties to start these institutes. Out of these three are in Jaipur and one is in Kota.

At the foundation meeting, it was also decided that the Begum Hazrat Mahal scholarships will be offered to girl students.
