Committee to Look into Panjab University MPhil & PhD Admission Process for Disabled Category

Panjab University (PU) has recently formed a sub-committee that shall dedicatedly look into the proposal sent by the differently-abled students which state that no differently abled students should be denied admission in MPhil/Ph.D. courses.

The committee that was constituted to modify the Ph.D. guidelines in a meeting discussed the same and further set up a three-member committee to simplify the admission process for students with disabilities.

The meeting was led by Prof Shankarji Jha, the dean of university instructions, and a three-member committee including the controller of examinations Parvinder Singh and Parveen Goyal was constituted. A group of students with disabilities had written to the PU VC Prof Raj Kumar to implement the UGC guidelines so that differently-abled students are not denied admission.

These students have cleared the UGC-NET but still faced difficulties in getting admission in the PhD courses at the university. The students also made a request for a special admission drive for the disabled students in MPhil and PhD under a clause of the UGC Regulations, 2016.

The letter also mentioned that even if after the relaxation, the seats for SC/ST/OBC and differently-abled are not filled, the concerned authorities will have to start a special admission drive for that category and that too within a month from the closure date of admission for the general category. The university will need to have an admission procedure along with the eligibility criteria in place so that the majority of the seats under these categories are filled.
