P.B. Sunil Kumar, Director-in-Charge of Indian Institute of Technology, Palakkad revealed that the construction of transit campus would commence in January 2017 and all the necessary formalities for the construction of campus have been completed.
He mentioned that the transit campus would be constructed on the 70.02 acres of land in Palakkad district. Currently, the institute has been functioning through a temporary campus. The construction of transit campus will be at zero cost.
Former HRD Minister, Smriti Irani inaugurated the temporary campus of IIT-Palakkad on August 3, 2015. She assured that a campus would come up on 500 acres of land in Puducherry within two years as soon as the land acquisition and construction of the building are completed.
Sunil Kumar further added that the IIT had sought advance possession of land as it has to complete construction of laboratories, classrooms, and buildings for the coming academic session. The temporary campus does not have advanced facilities, and it cannot accommodate more than 120 students in each batch.
If everything had gone according to the plan, the construction of the 504.54 acres campus at Kanjikode should have already started. But since the process of acquisition of land was not complete due to litigation, the construction has been delayed further. The good news is that the officials of Revenue Department have intervened and have clarified that the 50 acres of land has now been acquired under New Land Acquisition Act and the value of the land is deposited in the court.
