Two doctoral faculty development programmes of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), i.e., Faculty Programme in Management (FPM) and Faculty Development Programme (FDP) have witnessed a rise in the number of applicants in the past three to five years. For instance, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow has witnessed the rise in the number of applicants from 250 to 300 in the past three years.
However, there has been a marginal fall in the number of applicants for FPM programme at Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode. A total number of 272 students registered for FPM programme at IIM Kozhikode in the year 2013. However, it was reduced to 134 this year. One of the officials of IIM Kozhikode revealed that the number of students registering for FPM programme varies from year to year.

An IIM official further explained that some of the candidates join the FPM or FDP programme in the same IIM from which they graduate. On the other hand, some students opt for other IIMs for further studies. For instance, most of the students who graduate from IIM Kozhikode enroll in other IIMs or national level institutes. Therefore, there is a variation in the number of applicants for FPM and FDM programme.
FDM and FPM are the two programmes, which act as a source of inducting trained faculty at the Indian Institutes of Management. These two programmes help in building a pool of doctoral candidates who could be potential faculty members for the IIMs. Surprisingly, the number of students opting for teaching profession at IIMs has not increased significantly. As a result, most of the faculty recruitment at IIMs happen directly.

A professor from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta revealed that around 300 students enroll in the FPM programme at the institute every year. The number of FPM candidates being recruited as faculty has been constant. Most of the fellow graduates from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta join as a faculty in other IIMs. In the year 2016, a total number of five fellow graduates joined other IIMs.
Similarly, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad receives 65-70 applications for FDP programme every year. The institute receives only one or two applications for FDP programme from other IIMs. Interestingly, none of the FDP participants joined IIM Ahmedabad so far, but instead they opted for other IIMs.
