JEE Main 2026 Day 1 Session 2 commenced on April 2, and it has set a critical benchmark for students aiming for seats in India’s premier technical institutes like IIT, NIT and IIIT. Day 1 impact on NIT and IIT admissions is crucial to note, as Day 1 performance acts as a ‘trendsetter’ for the normalization process and the subsequent cutoff shifts for NITs and IIITs. Both the shifts of Day 1 were easier than the January session. As per the student reactions, Shift 1 of April 2 was easier than the evening shift. If the same pattern follows in the upcoming days, the cutoff may increase, and students with higher marks will have better chances of grabbing admission at NIT & IIIT.

JEE Main 2026 Session 2 Day 1 Analysis by Subject Experts

According to subject experts, Day 1 Shifts 1 and 2 were ' Moderate '. While the questions in Physics were largely formula-based, Chemistry followed the NCERT-centric pattern. Day 1 feedback also suggests that questions in the Mathematics sections were time-consuming but surprisingly easier as compared to the difficult January Session.

A ‘Moderate' difficulty level is usually a double-edged sword. While students attempt more, it also leads to score inflation. Experts predict that for the same percentile achieved in Session 1, students might require 5-10 additional marks in Session 2 due to increased competition.

How Day 1 Performance in JEE Main 2026 Session 2 Affects NIT & IIIT Admissions

Admission to top-tier NITs such as Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal usually requires a percentile above 99.5 for popular branches like Computer Science (CSE). As the level of difficulty was moderate on Day 1, the ‘safe score’ for a 99 percentile is expected to be around 190-200 marks.

IIITs offer mainly specialized IT and Electronics branches, and the trend is expected to be similar for IIITs as well. Students with 95-96 percentile (approx. 140–150 marks) might get admissions in the newer IIITs but to secure admissions at the top-ranked IIITs like Allahabad or Gwalior, one needs to ensure that they score above 98.5 percentile for General Category. Here is the expected cutoff guide for NIT & IIIT Admissions through JEE Main 2026:

Institute Tier

Branch

NIT Expected Percentile

IIIT Expected Percentile

Top Tier (e.g., NIT-T, IIIT-A)

CSE / IT

99.7 to 99.9

99.2 to 99.6

Mid Tier (e.g., NIT-K, IIIT-L)

CSE / ECE

98.5 to 99.4

97.5 to 98.8

Lower/Newer Tier

Core / CSE

95.5 to 97.0

94.0 to 96.0

JEE Main 2026 Session 2 performance is the final determining factor for the All India Rank (AIR). You must focus on accuracy over volume, as even a minor slip in the exam could lead to significant rank drops in a high-scoring environment.
