IIM Nagpur Director Urges Students to take up Entrepreneurship

Director of IIM Nagpur, Mr. LS Murthy advised the students to give more emphasis to entrepreneurship than jobs. After assuming the charge as Director a year ago, Mr. Murthy undertook various activities like taking steps for the construction of a new facility at Mihan, introducing entrepreneurship programme for students and appointment of new faculty members. Apart from these major activities, Mr. Murthy also focused on some minor development activities.

Giving details about the 2^nd convocation ceremony of IIM Nagpur that is scheduled to take place on April 18, 2018, Mr. Murthy disclosed the future plans of the premier institute.

Explaining the placement performance of IIM Nagpur, Director Murthy stated that the premier institute treats its placement cell as career development services. A placement process is a compilation of several aspects, and these aspects will have significant relevance. Therefore, these aspects should not be neglected at any cost. It is the responsibility of the institution to maintain a delicate balance between students’ interests and industry needs. For instance, a good product needs marketing, and it is a situation where career development services make an impact, he highlighted.

Giving more details about the activities of career development cell, Mr. Murthy mentioned that the cell does not focus on landing the students in a regular job. The major focus will be on entrepreneurship. At IIM Nagpur, if a student is not interested in taking part in campus placements, he/ she will be allowed to choose entrepreneurship as a career path. If these students fail to settle or make an impact within two years of choosing entrepreneurship, they can come back to campus and take part in campus placements, he explained.

Highlighting various activities that are being carried out by IIM Nagpur to promote entrepreneurship, Mr. Murthy revealed that the premier institute is a part of IIM Bangalore’s Women Start-Up Programme (WSP). The idea is to encourage more women to take up entrepreneurship, he added.

Mr. Murthy further said that IIM Nagpur has been functioning in a temporary campus and will soon shift to its permanent campus in Mihan by 2020. The construction of permanent campus was expected to be completed earlier. However, the process was delayed due to some reasons. The construction work of permanent campus has resumed. A project manager has been appointed to implement the building plans. A more creative and innovative campus will come up soon, he assured.

Disclosing details about the faculty strength, Mr. Murthy revealed that the institution has seven faculty members and all of them have Ph.D degrees. More faculty members are expected to join soon. Faculty recruitment is a tedious job and it consumes a lot of time. However, the institution is trying its best to provide adequate ambience to entice the best, he indicated.
