IIM Shillong 9th Convocation: PGP Diplomas Conferred to 172 Students

IIM Shillong 9th Convocation: PGP Diplomas Conferred to 172 Students

The 9th convocation of IIM Shillong took place on April 16, 2018 (Monday). Vice-President of India, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu was the Chief Guest of the occasion. A total number of 172 PGP students were conferred diplomas and 30 students received Post Graduate Executive degrees. Governor of Meghalaya, Mr. Ganga Prasad and Cabinet Minister of Meghalaya, Mr. James Sangma were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the students, Vice President of India expressed the fact that values are being degenerated and the absence of fear of law are leading to a crooked and deviant behaviour among people. One should possess the values of truthfulness, integrity and honesty. During the progress of career aspirations, an individual should not forget or violate corporate ethics, he cautioned.

Mr. Venkaiah Naidu quoted the seven sins mentioned by Mahatma Gandhi and advised the students to stay away from committing them. The seven sins advocated by Mahatma Gandhi are: -

  • Politics without Principle
  • Religion without Sacrifice
  • Science without Humanity
  • Commerce without Morality
  • Knowledge without Character
  • Pleasure without Conscience
  • Wealth without Work

The Vice-President further urged the students to possess a sense of gratitude, patience, ethical values, uncompromising honest & integrity and strong character. The success of the career of an individual will be possible only if he/she possesses these qualities, he explained.

Mr. Venkaiah Naidu expressed his concern that the people in the modern world lack some essential qualities like empathy, gratitude and concern for fellow human beings. In this scenario, it is mandatory for the youth to develop an attitude of caring and sharing, he stated.

Honourable Vice President of India concluded that the education should not be seen as a mere source of employment but as a medium of empowerment and enlightenment. He advised the premier management institutes to lay more emphasis to research publications.
