IIT Admissions 2017-18: Number of Women Enrolling for Engineering Courses Rises

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have recorded a 1.3% rise in the number of female students who registered for engineering programmes in 2017. Women representation at IITs has gone up from 8% in 2016 to 9.3% in 2017.

The rise in the percentage of women enrolled at IITs is an encouragement for the IIT Council as a plan to increase the number of seats for women will be launched by the institutes in 2018. The premier engineering institutes are planning to increase the number of women students to 20% of the total intake by 2026. IITs do not provide any reservation for female candidates up till now.

In 2017, 1,018 women took admission in IITs as compared to 840 in 2016, marking a 21% increase. The most significant increase was registered by IIT Delhi i.e. 30% with the number of female enrollment rising from 70 to 93. This number is expected to rise as a certain number of seats have been reserved for women candidates.

The percentage of girls enrolled in IITs has been fluctuating these past few years depending on various factors. This has been one of the factors why IITs have not been given superior global ranks in educational surveys.

Check out the number of female students enrolled at IITs in the past few years:

Various IITs have also succeeded in creating a communication channel for female students via help desks and help lines. An on campus interactive session was conducted by IIT Delhi for girls who had cleared the JEE Advanced 2017.

Coordinator of the Session, Prof Shalini Gupta said that the institute received a positive response from all the girls. The idea of the session was to help the female candidates in the admission process and create a platform for them where they can clear their doubts. Consultations were also done through telephone and emails.

Many of the female candidates who had cleared JEE Advanced in 2017 could not take admission in IITs as they had not filled enough choices during the counselling. Therefore, in 2017, IIT Kharagpur conducted a session for female candidates where it imparted knowledge crucial in securing a seat.

Director of IIT Delhi, Prof V Ramgopal Rao, said that a large number of female candidates apply for the institute’s postgraduate programmes. He added that the institute is expecting a 30% increase in the number of female candidates in UG courses.
