The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) India collaborated with IIT Delhi to develop innovative solutions for the food safety nets of the government through operational research. The aim is to support the government to achieve food and nutrition security targets.

According to the statement of the institute, the partnership with WEP is set with an objective to use advanced analytics and operations research techniques to achieve practical solutions which include support for long term strategic planning of procurement, storage of grains, movement of food grains by agencies like FCI and creation of cost-effective supply chain network under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) at the state level.

The institute further said such initiative is especially required for states like Uttarakhand where the availability and supply of food grains is a challenge throughout the year due to various factors like terrain, limited transportation facilities and disintegrated storage spaces,

Both WEP and IIT Delhi will work closely with the state and central government throughout the research. They aim to optimise the supply chain and also analyse other operations like stocks management, harvest yields and consumption. Through research, the institutes will aim to identify challenges and come up with solutions.
