IIT Kanpur and L&T Technology Services Sign MoU for Cyber Security Research

IIT Kanpur and  L&T Technology Services Limited (LLTS) have signed an MoU recently for research work in industrial and infrastructure cybersecurity. A Center of Excellence (CoE) will be set up in IIT Kanpur campus in collaboration with LTTS for research.

An MoU was signed between IIT Kanpur and L&T Technology Services Limited (LTTS) for research work in industrial and infrastructure cybersecurity. IIT Kanpur Deputy Director, Prof Manindra Agrawal (also a joint-coordinator of the centre) and LLTS CEO, Dr Keshav Panda signed and exchanged the MoU.

According to the MoU, a Center of Excellence (CoE) will be set up in IIT Kanpur campus in collaboration with LTTS. The research will be done in areas like Honeypot (a network - device that entraps cyber attacks and also analyses any hacking attempts), IDS, Malware analysis, vulnerability assessment, malware analysis, blockchain and penetration testing. In addition to it, the cybersecurity awareness programme and training will be organised in the centre.

The MoU will also provide LTTS access to the cutting-edge testbed for critical infrastructure of IIT Kanpur. While signing the MOU both LLTS and IITK has agreed that cybersecurity is a basic component of any infrastructure which is built from the ground up.

According to a statement released by the institute, IIT Kanpur has taken the initiative in Cyber Security and has established the Interdisciplinary Centre for Cyber Security and Cyber Defence of Critical Infrastructures (C3i). The statement also added that the initiative has been taken to do research, education, training and explore the cybersecurity trends and develop infrastructure that is technologically and will protect the critical infrastructure.

As per the MoU, Center of Excellence (CoE) will be part of C3i Center of IITK. C3i is a cybersecurity research centre funded by the Government of India. It was developed to work on solutions and technologies and protect the Strategic and Critical Utility Infrastructure of India.

In an address to people Prof. Sandeep K. Shukla who is the Joint Coordinator of the C3i Center and Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at IIT- K said that cyber-attacks have affected millions of IT and OT systems across the globe in the past few years. The attacks resulted in operational downtime, logistic failures, and production cycle disruption. The MoU will help counter such cyber attacks by the deep-rooted and proven technological expertise of LLTS and C3i Center research expertise.

Dr Keshav Panda, CEO and MD of LTTS said that the partnership between IITK and LTTS will begin a new chapter in the industrial and defence cybersecurity and will help create safe, secure and smart solutions for the industrial sector of India.
