Electronic railway interlocking system is the latest invention of the scientists of IIT Kharagpur, that prevents trains from colliding into each other. The new tool has been successfully tested by the scientists of the premier institute following which the train journeys would be much safer than before as it will prevent trains from colliding into each other.
The tool suite became possible because of the collaboration of IIT-Kgp and following departments like-
- Computer Science and Engineering Department of IIT-Kgp
- Service Improvement Group (SIG) of the Indian Railways
- Research, Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO)
While elaborating about the project Prof Pallab Dasgupta who is the lead researcher of the project said that this development has the potential to minimise the chance of errors. Already the tool has been successfully tested in several railway yards.
Several IIT researchers said that this project has the potential to be further extended to study as well as to develop optimum traffic operation plans. Through RDSO, the Indian Railways has awarded 12 research projects to IIT-Kgp's Centre for Railway Research in the following areas like-
- Design of rolling stock
- Operations and maintenance
Several technologies and products are already being field tested at various facilities of Indian Railways currently. This is another addition to the testing taking place at IIT Kharagpur.
In the next step, the institute is planning to further develop the products and technologies in collaboration with an industrial partner for production. IIT is simultaneously also working on railway interlocking system which is a very critical signalling system.
