Indian Institute of Technology - Madras ha launched a Historical Archive to mark the diamond jubilee of the institute. Historical Archive at IIT-M would exhibit previous achievements of students, researchers, alumni, teachers and awards given by deemed organisations. Heritage centre of IIT-M came up with this idea of showcasing the growth institute has made over these years. Achievements are to be organized decade wise to maintain the timeline.
Since the foundation of Institue in 1959, many feathers have been added to the cap of IIT-M including innumerable national and international awards. Earlier this year, IIT-M was ranked one bt the Government of India in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resources Development. The institution also bagged the prize of being the top innovate education centre in the country by the Innovation Cell of MHRD in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements 2019 (ARIIA).

The foundation of IIT Madras was in assistance with the republic of Germany, as a consequence, there are many german archives of the Indo-German collaboration marking the establishment of the institute. These are going to be an essential part of the historical archives.
Director of IIT-M, Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi commented that universities of India do not have the trend of maintaining and exhibiting archives, whereas, all the top-notch foreign universities do it. He also added that IIT-M will be making serious efforts in future to maintain these archives.

Apart from the records of academic departments at IIT-M, the officials have decided to collect research papers from professors and scholars. There are plans to take interviews of alumni to record oral history.
The initiative to showcase success and maintain archives is a good exercise practised by all the top universities in the world. IIT-M is going to be a new trendsetter by doing such a thing in India. Other Indian universities can take inspiration from IIT-M.
