20 Indian Colleges to Set Up International Student Centres

HRD Ministry is aiming to attract more foreign students in Indian institutes by setting up state-of-the-art hostel facilities in 20 top higher learning institutes. The ministry will help these institutes in developing ‘International Student Centres’ on their campuses.

20 Indian Colleges to Set Up International Student Centres

As a part of ‘Study in India’ initiative of the central government, 20 colleges in India are expected to get state-of-the-art hostel facilities to attract international students. One of the government officials revealed that the lack of suitable hostels and food choices turned as a major hindrance in terms of attracting international students. Most foreign students looking for a better hostel facility with suitable food choices. However, most Indian institutes lack the same. As a result, international students are showing little interest in joining Indian institutes, he pointed.

Union HRD Ministry is aiming to increase the number of foreign students in Indian institutes to 0.2 million by 2023. The HRD Ministry received Rs. 779 crore for this purpose. Out of the total funds received, a substantial part of the fund will be used for creating ‘International Student Centres’. These centres provide superior accommodation facility and campuses for international students. The remaining part of the grant will be used for providing scholarships.

Initially, the government will support at least 20 top higher learning institutes for developing the ‘International Student Centres’. The state-of-the-art hostels will have more than 100 rooms with attached bathrooms. These hostels will also have modern amenities, gyms, international cuisine, and self-cooking facilities. The guidelines to build these centres have already been finalised by NITI Aayog.

The institutes will have to provide land for setting up International Student Centres on their campuses. The government may allocate Rs. 10 crores for each institute for developing these centres. More details will be confirmed soon.
