A recent analysis by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) revealed that less than 14% of the Indian Students with Chinese medical universities were able to clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination from 2015 -2018. FMGE is a compulsory exam to get a licence for practising medical courses in India.
From a total of 14,702 students studying in 42 approved universities of China, about 1,790 students were able to cleat the FMGE from 2015 to 2018, which is only 12% of the total students. Jinzhou Medical University was at the top with around 28.93 per cent Indian Students that cleared FMGE. Less than 10% of the students were from the Wuhan University which is quite famous in the southern part of India for medical courses. Fudan University which is known to be one of the best medical universities in China was not a part of the study.
The same issue was brought to notice, previously by a leading daily, where they mentioned the NBE tracks of Indian Students who graduated from Foreign Medical Colleges and came back to India for practising the same. As per the reports, 61,798 students have graduated from foreign medical colleges between 2015 - 2018, out of which, 20,310 graduated from Chinese medical colleges. Out of these Indian students with Chinese medical colleges, only 2,369 students which are 11.67% passed the FMGE exam. However, the percentage of Indian students graduating from Chinese universities that offer MBBS to students in English was 12.17 per cent.
China’s Minister of Education annually releases a list of universities that are going to accept international students in the upcoming academic years. According to the latest list released by the Chinese Government, around 45 medical universities across China are offering approximately 3,370 seats to international students in the current academic session. Whereas, the estimation states that Indian students are pursuing higher education form more than 200 Chinese universities.
