AIIMS and JIPMER MBBS Admissions

Starting from 2020, all 15 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry will offer students admission to MBBS/ BDS courses through NEET UG. This move will add close to 1,600 seats for students taking the entrance test.

Currently, India has 76,000 undergraduate medical seats in 539 medical colleges. Dr. Harsh Vardhan informed that under the new National Medical Commission (NMC) there will be no multiple entrance examinations for undergraduate medical admissions. The plan is to have a single exam that will include AIIMS and other institutes that offer the undergraduate course. The exam will start from the next academic year.

JIPMER has around 200 undergraduate sears and AIIMS have around 1212 seats that also include seats for the reserved category students. From the next academic session, four more AIIMS are likely to get operational and offer students admission at the undergraduate level. This will add around 200 more MBBS/BDS seats

National Medical Commission also has a provision for conduction a National Exit Test (NEXT). NEXT will act as the common final year MBBS exam for admission to PG medical courses and it will also act as a screening test for foreign medical graduates planning to work or study in India.

He further informed that the NEXT results will be one of the main criteria to rank medical colleges across the country. Out of the 539 medical colleges in India, 279 are government medical colleges.

Arjun Singhal, Additional Secretary, informed that the commission will make sure to not rely on infrastructure alone but will also give weightage to the outcome. This will also reduce dependency on frequent inspections. NEXT is likely to be implemented within three of NMC being constituted.
