President Pranab Mukherjee expressed his hope that Indian educational institutes can be among the best educational institutes in the world. Indian educational institutes do not lack merit and are fully equipped to take up challenges.

Congratulating Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore for occupying a spot among the top ten institutes in the Best Small Universities section of the Times Higher Education Rankings in 2017. The President conveyed his sincere compliments to all faculty, students and staff of the institute for responding to his repeated calls to strive for better and occupy the top positions in the rankings for the best institutes of higher learning in the world.

IISc Bangalore achieved the 8th rank among the Best Small Universities in the world, in a recent survey conducted by UK’s Times Higher Education (THE). It is the only and first institute from India to make it to the top 10 in the rankings.

Last year two Indian institutes - Savitribai Phule Pune University and Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, were ranked at 14th and 18th positions respectively.

US-based California Institute of Technology retained the top position. Three universities from France featured in the top 10 which included École Normale Supérieure, École Polytechnique and École Normale Supérieure de Lyon with second, fourth and seventh positions respectively.

Three Italian universities also figured in the top 10 list. They are Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (5th position), Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (6th position) and Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (10th position).
