JNU and Bangalore University to Establish Northeast Students’ Hostels

Dr. Jitendra Singh has announced that the Northeast students’ will be provided with hostels both in Bangalore University and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). During a meeting in New Delhi, he confirmed that these hostels will be functional soon.

According to him, a large number of students from North Eastern states pursue courses in Bangalore University, therefore it was decided to establish a hostel in the campus itself to meet the accommodation demand of the students. The varsity has already had a piece of land for this purpose which they acquired two years ago and the construction is work is almost done.

Also, another hostel will be built in the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University to accommodate the north-eastern students. A piece of land had been acquired within the JNU campus and the construction work will be completed soon. The cost of construction of both the hostels is borne by the Ministry of Northeast (DoNER).

The JNU hostel for Northeastern students will have four storeys and a total of 224 rooms for accommodating students. 24 rooms out of the total will be reserved for students with disabilities. The Vice Chancellor of JNU, M Jagadesh Kumar, said that the entire funding is being done by the North East Council which is under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. The aim is to create about 440 more living spaces in all the hostels across the JNU campus for students who come from the North East part of India. The additional rooms will be allotted to these students on priority.

Jagadesh Kumar further added that in JNU, students are not given hostels region-wise. Students from all around the country and overseas live together and do not have hostels allotted to them on the basis of the region they come from. This makes the JNU campus highly cosmopolitan. The construction of the new hostel will begin in the upcoming weeks and the building is expected to be completed by the year 2021. Hence, more residential space will be available for students from the academic session of 2021-2022.

Kumar added that the need for increasing the total hostel seats on the campus has been rising due to the number of courses being increased. The academic programmes at JNU are being expanded almost every year due to which there is a rise in the demand for hostel accommodation as well.

Apart from this, they are planning to construct another hostel in Rohini, Delhi which will be primarily for the Delhi University students. They are also planning to set up a Northeast Convention cum Cultural Centre at a prime location at Dwarka in Delhi.
