Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) to Set Up Centre for Poor Children in Kolkata

KISS, an acronym of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, which is known for providing free education from KG to PG to 37,000 tribal students in Odisha, has decided to set up a similar centre for poor children in Kolkata. For this purpose, KISS has signed an agreement with a Kolkata-based NGO. The KISS centre for poor children will come up at Eastern Metropolis in Kolkata and will start functioning from the academic session 2019.

Founder of KISS, Achyuta Samanta revealed that KISS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ‘Help us to Help them’, an NGO based in Kolkata. Primarily, the centre will provide free education to 1,000 poor children. The centre will be open not only for tribal children but also other poor children.

Apart from its main centre in Bhubaneswar, KISS also runs a centre for 600 street children in Delhi. KISS has always been active in social activities and making education accessible to the backward sections of the society. At present, KISS is also planning to start such centres in Jharkhand and Bihar.

Apart from free education to tribal students, KISS also provides free food and accommodation from KG to PG. Students enrolled in KISS will be provided jobs after the completion of education.

Explaining the financial sustainability of KISS, Achyuta Samanta stated that a portion of financial resources comes from KIIT’s turnover and contribution from employees. The institute is also able to receive financial resources from the sale of products made by KISS students of vocational training courses. The institute receives major funds in the form of donations, he added.

In August 2017, KISS has been declared as deemed-to-be varsity. It is the first tribal university in the world.
