IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay to Get Autonomy to Decide Hiring, Fees and Courses

After granting Institute of Eminence (IoE) status to IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is set to free these premier institutes from the control of IIT Council. IIT Council that comes under the ambit of HRD Ministry is the highest decision-making body of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Apart from coordinating the activities of 23 IITs across the country, IIT Council advises IITs on the matters pertaining to scholarships, fees, the method of recruitment, duration of courses and policies associated with cadres. The decisions of IIT Council are binding on all IITs.

As per the IoE scheme, the higher educational institutes awarded with IoE status will enjoy greater autonomy. Since IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay acquired IoE status, they are free to decide tuition fee for international and domestic students. These institutes are also free to design or frame their own courses along with fee structure and duration. However, the government will have to tweak some rules to grant such autonomy to IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. These institutes are still bound by the decisions of IIT Council as per IIT Act.
