Sumant Bindal, an M.Sc. Agriculture (Genetics & Plant Breeding) student of Lovely Professional University bagged a scholarship of Rs 1.30 Crores to study Ph.D in Plant Sciences at the Australian National University (ANU). It is the highest scholarship ever received by an agriculture student of India, and LPU is the first university in India to achieve this fete.
The Ph.D programme at ANU will begin from September 28th, 2020. The research topic of student the ‘Identification of signalling pathways activated by resistant genes against Fusarium wilt in tomato’.

The research will focus on the production of tomatoes which will be completely resistant to Fusarium wilt (a type of plant fungus that infects tomatoes worldwide).
Sumant has also got an opportunity to work as an intern at the globally renowned World Vegetable Center, Taiwan when he was in M.Sc second year. The internship programmes was fully funded by the Taiwan government.
When asked, Suman said that it is his dream destination to pursue PhD from ANU which is one of the leading research institutes in the world.
It is a big achievement for LPU as well, as one of its students got selected for the highest scholarship grant to pursue Ph.D. Such opportunities motivate Agriculture students to come up with path-breaking research and innovation in the field of Agriculture.
