Single List of MBA and PGD Courses Released by AICTE

AICTE has announced a single list of 73 MBA and PG Diploma courses that would be valid in India from the Academic Year 2020. Management colleges have been asked to change the names of their existing courses as per the names provided in the list.

Update: AICTE has decided to convert four management courses into vocational programmes. As per the update, MBA and PG Diploma Courses in Modern Office Management, Modern Office Practice, Modern Office Management and Secretarial Practice, and National Management Programme will now be converted into vocational courses.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) released a list of 73 Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) course names. This list was released by the council as an effort to reduce confusion and redundancy in the names of management courses in India.

As per the information given out by the council, the list has been provided to all of the approved management institutions and India and the council has asked the institutions to rename their current management courses while adhering to the new nomenclature as provided in the recently-released list. The institutions have been asked to adhere to the new guidelines when they filed for the Extension of Approval for the 2020 academic year.

As an example, all of the business-related and other similar courses in management, which include specialisations such as 'Business Entrepreneurship', 'Business Studies' etc. will be known as 'Business Management'. Additionally, tourism-related courses such as 'Travel & Leisure', 'Travel & Tourism' will be clubbed under 'Tourism Management' and the 'Telecom Management' specialization has been reserved for courses such as 'Telecom and Marketing', 'Telecom and Information Technology' etc.

The announcement has been made following concerns that the nomenclature of MBA specialization in India was getting confusing and redundant, which can also be observed from the examples cited above.

As management education becomes even more popular and an increasing number of management courses are offered by MBA colleges in India, this move will help provide clarity and remove confusion from the mind of the student when going for the course. It can also help create a more uniform curriculum and make management education in India streamlined and future-ready.
