  • NEET cut-offs 2018 have dropped as a result of the percentile system and admissions are possible at 17% marks.
  • The percentile system to define eligibility has resulted in students with low marks to secure admission.
Medical Admissions basis NEET Possible with 17% Marks

NEET result 2018 has been announced and according to the new scores, NEET cut-off 2018 has dropped by 22 marks. Where last year the qualifying marks for general students in the exam was 131, this year the minimum has stooped to 119. Over 13 lakh students had appeared for NEET 2018 and more than 7 lakh of these students have qualified the exam.

Drop in NEET cut-off 2018 means that qualifying percentage of marks has also dropped this year. In 2017, over 4,300 students who appeared for NEET scored less than 180 marks out of 720 and most of them secured admissions in private medical colleges. Experts suggest that it is due to the percentile system that people with low percentage of marks in NEET also secure admission in medical courses.

What happens when there are low cut-offs for an exam?

  • Low marks but high percentile: A candidate can secure 180 marks in the exam if he or she has answered 40% of the questions correctly and the remaining incorrectly (negative marking applied). Although 180 out of 720 only makes up 25% marks, it stands up to 64th percentile and is way above the eligibility bar of 50th percentile marks.
  • Similarly, a student who secured 270 would have answered 50% questions correctly and the remaining 50% incorrectly. Although 270 out of 720 would seem a low score, it makes up to 80th percentile.
  • In NEET 2018, a student who has secured 119 marks (NEET cut-off for general students) may have answered only 33% questions correctly. This implies that students who have secured close to 17% marks in NEET 2018 will be eligible for MBBS.

This proves that as the cut-offs have not been specified, the qualifying marks for NEET are dropping. With no subject-wise cut-offs in the NEET exam, students with zero or even negative marks in either chemistry, biology or physics are securing admission in medical colleges.
